Dueling Dragons etched on smoked glass

April 2009

While walking down the side of the road near my home on bulk trash collection day when I was fifteen years old, I made and extraordinary find. I found and salvaged two identical pieces lightly smoke glass 1/8" thick with beveled edges. At 15" x 10" they were just a bit smaller than a standard tabloid size sheet of paper.

The dueling dragons featured here were drawn while I was in high school and destine to be etched in glass. After masking off the entire pane of glass, I began carving away from it to create the protective negative, but for reason I can't recall the project was put on hold and was not resumed until I was in my third year at the University of Florida. There I resumed work on the mask and then made use of the tools available at the school's materials lab to finish the etching and create the base. The base is made from a single length of cherry wood and uses friction to hold the pane perfectly vertical.

The other pane of glass that was salvaged that day, was used to create another etching. That graphic was given away as a birthday gift to a close friend. Sadly, I have no images of that piece to display.
