MGarito | Design | Gem
This project is the second project completed in learning the software package Maya. This project focused on using polygon modeling and introduced animating objects in Maya. This project also was used as an introduction to some of the equipment available at the school to produce a physical output from the digital creation. We produced a digital gem in Maya, a laser cut version, a 3D printed version, a milled version, renderings, and an animation all derived for the original gem.
The 3D print version is an array of smaller gems that have been torqued and twisted to create a new form expressing change across the array.
The 2D drawings for this project are intended to illustrate aggregations of the gem and how transitioning between two different gems could produce a field effect.
By unfolding the gem into a series of developable pieces, I produced a sort of construction document, which was then used to create a scale model of the gem with a CNC laser cutter.
The last state of the project was to translate the 2D drawings which are transitioning between two different gems, into a 3D field / surface, which would be milled on the school's CNC machine.
