This infill project was aimed at creating a local civic center in the historic downtown district of Gainesville, Florida. Intended as a place to house special collections relative to the history of the region, the project would serve as a medium between past and present in addition to increasing the overall vibrancy of the downtown area.

The project has three levels, each with its own subtly different perspective on reading. The ground floor contains the main reading room which is open to the sky and is central to the projects vertical circulation. In this area reading is a more personal experience as it is a quitter more formal space. The second floor, contains a small gallery and presentation space, as such the reading spaces on this level are oriented towards persons working within small groups. The third floor has an exterior garden terrace in addition to a a more informal setting, which is intended to emphasize a more social reading area.

Running through the project is a brick wall which was a remnant of a previous building dating to the historic origins of the city of Gainesville. Building around it, over it, even through the existing wall was done so in an effort to, in a physical way, bring forth the history of the city, to compliment the historical collection of books this reading room would house.
