IKAR is "a traditional and progressive Jewish spiritual community in LA."

Studio IKAR was comprised of two components. We were first charged with the task of physically evaluating the existing facilities used by IKAR at the West Side Jewish Community Center in Los Angeles. We were then to make a proposal for new facilities, which could range from a partial renovation of existing community center to completely new facility located on the same site.

Making that proposal though was a difficult process, given the history associated with Jewdaism and synagogues. Historically, synagogue architecture is very nondescript and highly internalized. Leaving very little interaction between the service and the surrounding community. After speaking with IKAR's rabbi, and a few of its members we decided the best way to achieve IKAR's goals of community involvement and interaction, were to physically open the site to public pedestrian movement and articulate the projects fenestrations to blur the line between public and private.

Using a series of ribbons that separate to create the fenestration system, we created an exterior surface that from one perspective appears solid, while from another it appears highly transparent. These opening are further oriented to optimize the collection of ambient skylight and breakup direct sun light.
